Mick McNeil (1964-72)

Mick McNeil

From Middlesbrough FC website ...

LOCAL lad Mick McNeil was studying to be an analytical chemist and turning out for Cargo Fleet when he was spotted by Boro coach Jimmy Gordon in May 1957.

He made his debut in 1958 as left-half in an extraordinary game at Brighton that Boro won 6-4, but it was not until he was moved to left-back the following season that he found a regular place in the team.

McNeil was a forceful defensive player who could carry the ball up field rather than a scorer.

Indeed, during his entire Boro career, he only ever got three goals.

Despite playing in the Second Division, he won nine caps for England, although he missed out on joining the squad for the 1962 World Cup finals in Chile.

His move to Ipswich in 1964 was greeted with disappointment by the fans, coming hard on the heels of the departures of Alan Peacock to Leeds and Cyril Knowles to Spurs.

He helped Ipswich to promotion in 1968 and retired three years later to run a sports retail business in Bury St Edmunds.
