Though born in Coventry he was raised in Grimsby. He used to play for Louth United Juniors before joining Ipswich Town. During the 1980s there he used to be a framed caricature of him on the wall of the Park Avenue Ground club house at Louth, also remember ones of Glen Cockerill (Southampton) and Terry Donovan (Villa), other Grimsby-based teenagers who played for Louth during the 1970s before playing in the top flight.
