Born Cumnock Scotland in 1956. Joined Town as a teenager and made 500 first team appearances over a 14 year period before joining Sunderland in 1985. FA Cup Winners medal won in 1978. Capped by Scotland 11 times at senior level. Re-joined Town as Manager in 1994 from Colchester United. Guided Town back to the Premiership via a play-off final victory at Wembley in 2000, a fifth place finish the following season and qualification for the UEFA Cup for the first time since 1982. Burley was also voted Manager of the Year. However, relegation followed in 2002 and following a poor start to 2002/03 season was sacked on October 11th.
George Burley joined Ipswich Town as an Apprentice in July 1971.
