  • Though he was released at the end of his Ipswich Town apprenticeship in 1977, he joined Mansfield Town, then Peterborough, Northampton, Colchester and Aldershot, making over 400 FL apps until 1990. I contacted his father Mike Phillips in 1997, as Mike used to play for Grimsby Town! Ian was still living in Colchester at the time. Mike had scored over 100 goals in Scottish amateur football for Cumnock Juniors and was signed by the Mariners in Jan 1955. He played just six times and scored once before being released a few months later at the end of 1954/55. He then had two seasons with non-league Cheltenham Town before returning north of the border and joining Stranraer where he spent four seasons until 1962. Mike was father to another footballer too, Ian's older brother Gerry Phillips who was a striker for Ayr United, Queen of the South and Hamilton Academical (1974-87).
