After leaving Portman Road Wark continued playing football as an amateur, and signed for Woodbridge Town in 1999 where he lined up alongside former Ipswich team-mate Paul Mason. He also played veterans football for Windsor and Eton, played with Soccer AM's Badgers team at the Millennium Stadium, and has represented the Liverpool veterans in numerous Masters series.

Scored after just 12 seconds in a league game at The Dell, Southampton on 3-10-1981 in a 4-3 Town win. I believe this stands as the fastest ever goal scored at Southampton`s old ground. It`s not the fastest ever Town goal though - that honour belongs to Doug Millward who hit the back of the net after 10 seconds against Newport County at Portman Road in February 1957.

Per number of goals at Liverpool, even Warkie`s own autobiography states he scored 42 goals in 70 games! [Just double checked the highly reliable liverweb.org.uk and they state 45 goals in 108 games!! - Ralph]

Wikipedia and others show Wark as having scored 42 times in his 108 (14 as a sub) games for Liverpool. Season by season details (from the excellent liverweb.org.uk) show that he actually scored on 45 occasions.

I played with John (Johnny) Wark during our boys brigade days (141st Scotstoun West Parish). He played mid field then and to be honest he never really shone until he played for Drumchapel amateurs. In the same BB team was a young lad by the name of Andy Bradbury. He was signed by,Spurs at the age of 16 and was hailed the new Dalglish.Unfortunately Glenn Hoddle,Alfie Conn and Neil Mc Nabb also play at that time.

The first player to score a hat-trick of penalties in a competitive European game, doing so in the 5-1 victory over Aris Salonika in the UEFA Cup 1st Round, 1st Leg in 1980.

One of the finest players ever to grace the Portman Road turf. As a youngster I remember watching Warky appearing from nowhere in the opposition 6 yard box and firing bullet headers into the net. I am sure that Teddy Sheringham watched this man play and modeled himself (apart from the looks)on his ability to lose defenders, score and deliver killer passess. 42 goals for Liverpool, I think they could do with that now!! Has there been a more accomplished scoring midfielder in recent times? Idol and hero (except the moustache)and an all round nice guy, not up himslef or such like. Happy to chat and chew the fat. James
