Willie Clennell joined the club from Norwich City aged 13, playing a full season as goalkeeper for the Youth Team aged 16. He also made several appearances for the Reserves in friendly matches and was almost called up to the first team for an FA Cup match during a goalkeeper injury crisis at the club. A serious back injury at the age of 18 stalled his playing career and he went on to study French at University College London.
