In the 1994 World Cup tournament in the USA he played in the second round penalty shoot-out win over Mexico (scoring the 2nd Bulgarian penalty), came on as substitute in the famous 2-1 quarter-final victory over Germany and again as sub in the 2-1 semi-final defeat by Italy.
As a Luton Town player he also represented Bulgaria against Romania in a Euro '96 group match at St. James's Park, Newcastle. His appearance as a last minute substitute in that game brought his total to 12 caps in all.
