For all the goal-scoring wisdom Teddy Sheringham can impart on his Stevenage players following hundreds of strikes for Manchester United, Tottenham and England, the first of his managerial career had to be an own goal.

Still it was not enough for a first win, as Ipswich came from behind to dump Sheringham and the side he took charge of in the summer out of the Capital One Cup.

Sheringham's strikes won Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League trophies; they were celebrated in European Championship finals and World Cup qualifiers.

After taking charge of the League Two side and firing blanks in their opening game of the campaign against Notts County, one finally came off the leg of Ipswich defender Christophe Berra.

It opened the scoring at Portman Road in the 34th minute, striker Dean Parrett beating a defender and shooting low only for his shot to be saved by goalkeeper Dean Gerken and ricochet off Berra and in.

Parity was restored, however, 10 minutes in to the second half by a header Sheringham would have been proud of. Substitute Ryan Fraser sent in a corner from the right and defender Josh Yorwerth stooped to direct the ball through a mass of bodies.

That made amends, at least, for Yorwerth's terrible miss moments before, when the ball dropped to the player inside the box only for him to slice over. Not the sort of chance you want to drop to a centre-half.

Ipswich were in the ascendency and but for two saves within two minutes from Stevenage goalkeeper Chris Day, just after the hour mark, they would have gone ahead. Brett Pitman's was clawed out, low to Day's right and David McGoldrick headed another that the keeper beat out from close range.

Fraser was making all the difference after replacing Larsen Toure at half-time, mainly from the right but he popped up on the left, on 74 minutes, to pick out Luke Chambers at the back post. Chambers was free and headed across goal - it looked in - but wide.

Finally the home side got the goal their pressure warranted, two minutes later, and there was nothing Day could do about this one. David McGoldrick broke in to the box and rolled the ball across for Jay Tabb to tap in.

Stevenage thought they had won a penalty in the final 10 minutes when Berra and Parrett tangled in the area, the linesman flagged and referee Fred Graham pointed to the spot. However, after consultation between the pair in which they appeared to agree the Stevenage forward fell over the ball, Graham gave a drop ball instead.

So a goal from one of his strikers - and a win - eludes Sheringham still.
