Mick McCarthy made 11 changes and conceded that Pompey, 46 places below them in the league ladder, were deserved winners across both the original game and Tuesday night's replay.

The 2008 winners and 2010 finalists haven't had much luck since their Premier League days - but a penalty from Gary Roberts and Marc McNulty's header guided them into round four.

McCarthy said of his players: 'Did any of them give me a problem about picking my team in the next few weeks? I don't think so, no.

'Portsmouth deserved to win so to complain about other things is irrelevant.

'I have no regrets whatsoever, expect that our fans didn't see a performance from the lads who came in. None of them have really given me any great headaches in terms of picking them.'

Ipswich goalscorer Ainsley Maitland-Niles was the only player to come away with any credit from a visiting side that had Piotr Malarczyk sent off long after the hosts had done the damage.

Portsmouth took the initiative from the first whistle. Kyle Bennett fluffed an early chance with a weak shot having broken through down the left before Roberts' free-kick was blocked after a cynical challenge from Malarczyk that earned his first booking.

And the early pressure told as the hosts broke the deadlock just after the half-hour mark.

Clumsy centre half Malarczyk brought down Roberts inside the area and the former Ipswich winger dusted himself down to batter home the penalty through keeper Bartosz Bialkowski's fingers.

Ipswich were stunned and five minutes later they were two down. Gareth Evans delivered a brilliant cross from the right for McNulty, unmarked, to guide past the keeper with his head.

Fratton Park was bouncing. Portsmouth had not beaten a side from two divisions above them in the Cup since 1909 but the League Two side's illustrious visitors - seventh in the second tier - put up little resistance.

Arsenal loanee Maitland-Niles smashed in with his left from 25 yards to give Ipswich a route back into the game they barely deserved - and one that they were ultimately unable to take when Malarczyk fouled Roberts again to earn a second yellow.

In truth, it could have been more, and Roberts was disappointed not to be bringing the match ball home with him after the game having been withdrawn by manager Paul Cook to a standing ovation.

Portsmouth assistant Leam Richardson said: 'We did think we could push Ipswich to certain limits and with the lads' standards and application we managed to do that.

'We look forward to giving a good account of ourselves (against Bournemouth) and I'm sure the lads will be looking forward to that and revel in it.'

Fratton Park ended the night rocking to chants of 'Wembley' - they're a bit off that yet but Bournemouth beware - Portsmouth can upset the odds again.
