Match Report

Ipswich Town 1 Wigan 4

STEVE BRUCE won the family bragging rights as Wigan powered into the fourth round.

In what was billed as the Battle of the Bruces, dad Steve finally got one over on son Alex thanks to a second-half goal blitz.

The Latics boss has been waiting for a chance to get revenge since Ipswich beat his former club Birmingham last year — and it came in emphatic fashion.

Yet Bruce jnr came close to nicking the tie with a first-half chance cleared off the line.

Steve joked: “That’s 1-1 between us now, although I’m sure his mother was cheering for him and not me.

“He definitely would not have got back in the house if that chance had gone in.

“But like any father I’m really pleased for him and I thought he played well.”

Alex added: “The score flattered them but we made some silly mistakes and got punished. Dad had a big smile on his face though!”

Ipswich were the better side before the break but missed a host of chances.

Wigan took control in the second half when Lee Cattermole prodded the visitors in front on 52 minutes.

Jonathan Walters volleyed the Tractor Boys level nine minutes later.

But Olivier Kapo drilled Wigan back in front soon after, Paul Scharner added No 3 from close range with 20 minutes left and sub Henri Camara headed a fourth in injury-time.
