Match Report

BOOS BOOST DEADLY DAVE

PORTSMOUTH striker David Nugent revelled in his role as Portman Road fall guy.

Nugent laughed off the fans’ abuse as he scored his eighth in eight games against Ipswich and his third in the last five to help Pompey to their fourth straight win.

“It goes back to when I was with Preston and I scored here,” he said.

"They’ve been on my back ever since, but I thrive on it and it seems to make me play better. The more they boo, the more I want to score.”

His constant refusal to join the Tractor Boys when Jim Magilton was in charge did not help.

But Nugent, 26, said it was a case of wrong place, wrong time: “I’d had two hernia ops and I couldn’t have played for anyone at the time.”

Nugent struck for his 11th of the season after Ipswich had squandered a dozen good chances with Connor Wickham missing a handful.

Then Nugent pounced on a howler from keeper Marton Fulop to feed David Cotterill, who made it two.

Town’s Carlo Edwards said: “We’ve taken a step back after going on a good run, but let’s hope this is just just a one-off.”
