Match Report

Ipswich Town 3 Crewe Alexandra 2

Ipswich continued their good run ahead of the play-offs with a win, as they dominated most of the play against Crewe in a 3-2 victory.

Town looked keen to sign off the regular season on a high as they attacked from the off, with Matt Holland and Jamie Clapham both going close early on.

On the quarter hour mark Ipswich went close to taking the lead. Bobby Petta saw his shot cannon off the crossbar, the ball fell to David Johson, and the prolific striker made a rare error as he shot wide from close range.

The former Bury man atoned for that mistake in the 33rd minute though as he gave Ipswich the lead.

He latched onto Clapham's header and shot home past Bankole. Seven minutes later though Crewe were back on level terms, somewhat against the run of play, as Phil Charnock converted from Peter Smith's through ball.

Meanwhile, just before the break Johnson went close to putting Ipswich back in front, but Bankole saved well from his header.

Moving into the second half and within two minutes of the re-start Ipswich were awarded a penalty for a Seth Johnson challenge on Bruce Dyer.

Dyer himself stood up to take that spot kick, but fired wide of the goal. Town though re-established their lead in the 53rd minute as Mickey Stockwell applied the finishing touches at the far post.

A minute later and Ipswich had a two goal cushion, Alex Mathie guiding the ball home with the outside of his foot.

Crewe refused to lie down though and in a busy ten minutes they grabbed a goal back in the 59th minute as Steve Garvey found the back of the net with a spectacular 30 yard strike.

It finished 3-2 to Ipswich, who will face third placed Charlton in the play-offs.
