County Dump Out Ipswich

Notts County caused a Carling Cup upset when they dumped out Ipswich at Meadow Lane.

The Magpies are struggling in the bottom three of the Second Division but they defied their lowly position and goals from Simon Baldry and Mark Stallard guided them to their first home win of the season.

County made a bright start and deservedly took a second-minute lead.

Stallard waltzed past three Ipswich defenders and Matt Richards recovered to block his shot but Baldry was on hand to slam the ball home.

Stallard then forced a save from Kelvin Davis before Ipswich drew level in the sixth minute.

Dean Bowditch was pulled down in the box by Steve Jenkins and Pablo Counago stepped up to convert his second penalty in as many matches.

Stallard continued to cause the Tractor Boys no end of problems and it was no surprise that he restored County's advantage four minutes later.

Fabian Wilnis blocked Stallard in the box and the referee immediately pointed to the spot allowing the former Preston striker to stroke home.

Steve Mildenhall pulled off an impressive save to prevent Alan Mahon levelling again when he tipped over his 25-yard effort.

Ipswich piled on the pressure after the break as they went in search of an equaliser and both Counago and Wilnis had shots blocked.

Clive Platt had a chance against the run of play to extend County's advantage but Davis was equal to his effort.

Davis then pulled off a stunning save to deny Baldry when he tipped his left-footed effort around the post.

Sam Morrow had a wonderful chance to equalise 20 minutes from the end but he headed wide from just a yard out.
