Match Report

Town through to third round by ChevBlue

A comfortable win, but a less than inspiring performance, saw Town come from behind to beat a below strength Brighton in the second round of the Worthington Cup.

The Seagulls in an all-black strip, emblazoned with a rather ironic "Skint" logo, where without their leading marksman for the past two season, Bobby Zamora, and a number of other first team regulars.

Ipswich, captained by Hermann Hreidarsson in the absence of Matt Holland, could have been two goals up in the first five minutes, with Pablo Counago forcing a good save from former Town loanee Andy Petterson in the Brighton goal and shooting just wide 60 seconds later.

But in was the visitors who took the lead on eight minutes.

A free-kick from Watson was lofted into the Town area, Andy Marshall misjudged the balls flight, and it fell to Hammond who side footed the ball in from close range.

But Town were back in it just five minutes later.

Hreidarsson's pass found Jamie Clapham on the left wing and his low cross into the visitors area was struck home by Darren Bent.

Bent could have increased the Town lead with two further goal attempts in the next few minutes. First he beat Petterson to the ball only to see his lobbed attempt at goal go just a few feet high and wide and then headed just over the bar from a Jim Magilton cross.

Counago however made no mistake to give Town the lead in the 22nd minute.

Wrong footing two Brighton defenders on the left hand corner of the penalty area his low right footed shot found the bottom corner of Petterson's net.

Brighton struck back and could have levelled the scores after 38 minutes.

Wayne Brown committed a foul on the edge of the Town area and the resulting free-kick by Carpenter hit the cross bar.

It was Town that would score next and effectively end the game just on half-time.

Darren Ambrose struck a shot from just inside the area that hit the underside of the bar and ricocheted down over the line. Petterson's brief attempt to claim that the ball had not crossed the line was waved away by referee P. Armstrong after receiving an all clear from his linesman.

Only once in the second period did Brighton threaten to reduce the deficit when in the 53rd minute Marshall saved well with his feet from a McPhee shot.

The remainder of the half was a rather low key affair, with Town taking their foot of the pedal, despite the best efforts of the crowd to will the Town on to further goals. Having said that, Marcus Bent, on as a substitute for Counago, could have scored twice in the closing stages, first forcing Petterson to palm his shot against an upright and then firing wide from close range.

Town's first win for almost four weeks. Let's hope for a similar result in the Nationwide League encounter with Derby County at Portman Road this weekend.
