Match Report

Easy Win for Town In BristolBy ChevBlue

Ipswich cruised to victory at Ashton Gate as Second Division Bristol City were beaten 3-0 in Town's fourth pre-season friendly of the new season.

Quality strikes by forwards Darren Bent and midfielder Tommy Miller either side of the half-time break put Town well in control before Miller secured victory with his second goal of the game - via the penalty spot - on the hour.

The home side were restricted to just a few chances through out the ninety minutes, with the best of these coming at the start of the game. Defender Burnell's pass to Murray was pulled back across the Town goal but the City forwards were poorly positioned and unable to follow up.

Minutes later Andy Marshall spilled a long-range effort by Clist but the ball was cleared to safety by the Town defence.

Town where looking a lot sharper that they had done in their three earlier fixtures, and it began to tell.

City 'keeper Phillips did well to save a tenth minute free-kick by Jamie Clapham and after 25 they took the lead.

Darren Bent, partnering Marcus Stewart up front, headed Fabian Wilnis's cross into the top corner of the net, much to delight of the large contingent of Town fans.

Ipswich continued to enjoy the lion's share of possession and deservedly went further ahead five minutes before the break.

Bent took a throw-in on the right touchline which was met by Tommy Miller who cracked a fierce volley past the hapless Phillips.

The pace in earlier part of the second was somewhat slower and punctuated by no fewer than seven substitutions by both sides.

In the 60th minute one of these subs, City's Darren Jones, upended Alun Armstrong as he moved into the box to collect a Miller through ball.

Miller stepped up to take the spotkick and wrong footed the home 'keeper to score his second of the game.

Marshall was called on late in the game to save well from Rosenior but that was just about the extent of his afternoon's work-out.
