Match Report

Ipswich Town 1 Grasshoppers Zurich 1

A first half goal by Kevin Beattie raised Ipswichs hopes of moving on in the U.E.F.A Cup but Grasshoppers replied through Sulserin the second half and qualified on the away goals rule.

Throughout most of the half shots rained in on the Swiss goal as Grasshoppers were penned back in their own half, but generally they were off target.

Gates had a close-range shot blocked and Mills cross somehow evaded four colleagues waiting to score, before Beattie pounced on Burleys pass two minutes from the breakto hammer a left foot drive past the defenceless Berbig.

After 52 minutes Gates was close to increasing the lead, shooting just wide from 25 yards and Thijssen, completing a smart Ipswich move, put the ball over the bar.

Now desperate for a goal, Grasshoppers became much more positive yet Ipswich were quick to exploit the resultant extra space in the Swiss defence.

Several times Ipswich had chances to add to their lead, then Ipswich were caught by a Swiss breakaway and Sulser went round Beattie and shot past Cooper for a 68th minute equaliser and vital away goal.
