Match Report

Town Triumph! by Rich Godden

Ipswich got their season off to the best possible start with a 2-0 triumph over Walsall.

In Sky Sports' first live Nationwide game of the season, Ipswich took on Walsall.

And it couldn't have been further from Premiership life for Ipswich, as the game started as a scrappy affair, with both side leaving far too much room on the flanks.

And Town, dominant for most of the opening half, took the lead before the end of the first half with a well taken goal. Marcus Bent scrapped well to get the ball to Matt Holland and the skipper played a good ball to Darren Bent on the right side. Bent cut inside before hitting a great shot which the keeper did well to keep out, only for Darren Ambrose to sweep the ball home.

A deserved lead at half time for Town and, not wishing to let his side get complacent, George Burley brought on Jermaine Wright and Tommy Miller to shore up the midfield.

Town would add a second midway through the second period as Darren Bent headed a deep cross into Marcus Bent, who hit a superb overhead kick past the despairing keeper.

The rest of the game was comfortably played by Ipswich but that is no discredit to Walsall, who fought hard and had a couple of good chances.

But all in all, it was a deserved win for Town, and it is up to the players to build on this great start...
