Magilton gets first win

Two early goals gave Championship side Ipswich Town their first win under new manager Jim Magilton in Terryland Park on Wednesday evening. In a sun drenched Terryland over eleven hundred spectators turned up for a reasonably entertaining friendly game.

With a game the previous night and a game on Saturday against Kilkenny City, Tony Cousins was never going to over exert his side and several fringe players entered the game as expected in the second period and put up a good performance as United did not conceed in the second half.

Ipswich took the lead after only three minutes when Nicky Forster struck a powerful left foot shot to the roof of the net from the edge of the box.

12 minutes later they doubled their lead when left back Castro Sito gathered a poor clearance and hit a spectacular left foot volley from 25 yards out that dipped over Alan Gough.

On 20 minutes Alan Murphy broke down the right and crossed for Barry Moran on the far post who found Fran Carter 12 yards out, Carter could not keep his shot down and his effort went over the bar.

On 31 minutes Ipswich thought they had number three but Jason De Vos's header was disallowed for a push on Gough by referee Padraigh Sutton.

Thomas Gruszka made his home debut for United in the second half and was called into action on 52 minutes when Sam Parkin picked up on a Nigel Keady mistake on the edge of the penalty area but Gruszka pulled off a good save low to his right and pushed the ball out for a corner. From the resulting corner Ciaran Foley headed off the line.

On 64 minutes Liam McKenna met a corner from the right but his powerful header went straight across the face of the goal. Down the other end Darryl Knights connected with a Dean Bowditch corner on 74 minutes and glanced it off the crossbar.

The last action of a useful workout for both sides was when sub Darren Currie hit a curler narrowly wide of the outstretched Gruszka.
