Match Report

Bolton Wanderers 1 Ipswich Town 2

BOLTON retained pole position in the First Division despite capping a sequence of five draws with yesterday's home defeat.

Ipswich's winner came in the 88th minute when James Scowcroft punished the Bolton defence for a second time after a pass from Jason Cundy, who was outstanding in his team's third away success of the season.

In the absence of Nathan Blake (with Wales) and Gerry Taggart (Northern Ireland), Bolton started impressively. Briskly taken shots by John McGinlay and defender Chris Fairclough were clear indications of the determination to end their poor run of form.

After losing the last two away games, Ipswich could have been forgiven a cautious approach. But they combined attractively in midfield and could thank goalkeeper Richard Wright for preventing an early breakthrough. His save from Fairclough's sweetly-taken effort was inspirational.

But even a keeper of Wright's athleticism would have been hard pressed to prevent a goal after 31 minutes. Scott Green's short pass to Per Frandsen was driven low and hard from 20 yards by the Dane but the ball curled inches outside an upright.

Bolton suffered for their slackness in midfield in the 38th minute when Scowcroft was left with a tap-in for his sixth goal of the season after a long run and cross from Gus Uhlenbeek.

The home team began the second half with the same fury as their opening burst - and might easily have conceded another goal. Scowcroft, in the thick of the action again, darted into the six-yard area, but his only reward was a corner.

Bolton equalised in the 69th minute after an uncharacteristic slip by Wright who dropped the ball under pressure at a corner. Icelandic international Gudni Bergsson was credited with the final touch.

Cundy's crisp tackling kept the Ipswich defence solid, although they were spared by inadequate finishing from Scott Sellars and, to a lesser extent, Frandsen.

Jamie Pollock's Bolton debut, which included a booking, ended after 61 minutes when the former Middlesbrough man was replaced by David Lee. It summed up Bolton's day.
