Match Report

Southend United 2 - 4 Ipswich Town

Southend United took a 2-0 lead at home to Ipswich before losing 4-2. Mark Gower and Tes Bramble got the Blues goals before Ian Westlake, Marcus Bent, Darren Bent and Pablo Counago hit back.

Southend United manager Steve Wignall is encouraged with his side's performance in their opening pre-season friendly.

The Blues lost 4-2 at home to Ipswich after taking a 2-0 lead. Mark Gower and Tes Bramble got the goals.

Wignall told BBC Essex: "I thought the first 40 minutes were excellent and some of the football we played was really good to watch. We let them back into it and once it got to 2-2 we were chasing things a bit," said Wignall.

"Carl Emberson looked a bit edgy in goal but he's desperate to do well and he'll be fine. Mark Gower has got some great touches and the shape of the side we started with is what we're looking to start the season with," added Wignall.
