Match Report

More Wednesday woe

There were more groans at Hillsborough on Saturday than during Meg Ryan's performance in When Harry met Sally. In truth, they were more grumbles than anything pleasurable from the Wednesday fans, who were forced to watch their team fail to score for the fifth match running and subsequently lose their sixth game in seven.

This was a poor game, short on quality and invention, though if Wednesday had expended half as much energy as their manager Paul Sturrock, or Meg Ryan for that matter, the result may have been somewhat different. The Scot was irrepressible on Saturday, prancing up and down the touchline, feverishly barking instructions to his players.

The lack of confidence within his team, though, has now spread from the attack to the back four, who conceded a late goal for the second consecutive match when Ipswich's Nicky Forster prodded the ball past Weaver to create the biggest grumble of the day.

Lee Peacock should have given Wednesday the lead in the 71st minute but the striker dragged the ball wide from Chris Brunt's centre.

Sturrock later admitted: "The players are lower than a snake's belly."

Ipswich manager Joe Royle said: "I thought we shaded it."
