Match Report

Ipswich Town 5 Port Vale 1

Ipswich Town are just two points from securing a play-off place following Saturday's 5-1 demolition of Port Vale at Portman Road.

The previous two home games, against Reading and Tranmere, were against sides happy to frustrate by defending in depth, but Vale adopted an attacking approach which suited Town down to the ground.

The home side took just four minutes to take the lead, David Johnson rising unmarked six yards out to head home a Mauricio Taricco cross.

It was Johnson's 20th goal since moving to Ipswich in November and makes him the first Town player to score that many goals in a season since Kevin Wilson in the 1986-87 campaign.

Vale had a good spell after Ipswich's goal, and the home side were thankful for the intervention of Jason Cundy - made captain in the absence of injured Tony Mowbray - twice in a few minutes.

On 16 minutes he made a superbly-timed tackle on Gareth Ainsworth as he looked set to get clear, and three minutes later he pulled off a fine block to stop a goal-bound Stewart Talbot shot.

Ipswich virtually wrapped up the game with two goals in the space of two minutes midway through the half, both of them netted by exciting Dutch winger Bobby Petta.

His first on 27 minutes was the best one, with a thumping shot into the top corner of the net, following an Alex Mathie cross.

The second was equally well finished, this time with a low drive after a Kieron Dyer shot had deflected straight to him.

Town didn't ease off after the interval, with Matt Holland and Micky Stockwell both going close before Mathie extended the lead after 55 minutes.

Strike partner David Johnson whipped in a cross from the left, Mathie's flick was well saved by goalkeeper Paul Musselwhite, but Mathie was first to the ball and fired into the roof of the net.

The fifth goal arrived on 57 minutes, with a flowing move involving Holland, Petta, Stockwell and finally Taricco, with the Argentinian providing the cross for Johnson to finish from close range.

Ipswich took the foot off the pedal a little after that and Vale got the goal their enterprise deserved on 65 minutes when Dave Barnett rose unmarked to head home an Ian Bogie corner.

Musselwhite made some good saves to deny both Johnson and Mathie further goals, but Ipswich were happy to settle for five goals, the fourth time they have managed that many in a home game this season.

TEAM (played in 4-4-2 formation): Wright, Taricco (sub Tanner, 75mins), Cundy, Venus, Clapham, Stockwell, Holland, Dyer, Petta (sub Sonner, 84), Johnson (sub Scowcroft, 79), Mathie.

Attendance: 16,205.
