Match Report

Ninety-two To Go by ChevBlue George Burley has called on the Town squad to emulate the Massive's performance last season in the Nationwide league by scoring one hundred goals and winning back our place in the Premiership at the first attempt. So far so good, with two against Walsall in the season's opener and an impressive six today against fellow relegationist's Leicester.

All six of Town's goals were executed with aplomb and, but for a number of squandered chances in both half's, including a penalty miss by Marcus Stewart in the first, Ipswich could have notched up double-figures.

The first half had it all: The penalty save by Ian Walker, former Town man Scowcroft hitting the bar, several superb saves by Andy Marshall in the Ipswich goal, a Darren Bent effort headed off the line, Portman Road reverberating to claps of thunder, and a goal a piece for both sides from Matt Holland and Jonathan Stevenson.

Holland opened the scoring just before the break. Darren Bent's left wing cross found him just outside the six-yard box where he shook of the challenge of a defender and side footed the ball into the net.

What looked to be a perfect end to the half was canceled out just a minute later when Stevenson's 30-yard effort skidded off the surface just in front of Marshall and eluded the keeper's left hand to end in the bottom corner of the net.

Holland put Town back in front ten minutes into the second period as Leicester failed to clear a cross from Darren Ambrose and the Ipswich captain hit a looping shot into the visitors net.

Finidi George replaced Mark Venus shortly after and took a major part in Towns third goal of the afternoon. Receiving a short pass from Stewart he raced down the right wing and crossed for Darren Ambrose to head home from close range.

Six minutes later George opened his own account for the season with a perfectly placed shot into the bottom right-hand corner of Walker's goal.

Stewart, whose work rate throughout the game was exceptional, made way for Pablo Counago with seven minutes left to play. Counago, who by his own admission had a very frustrating start to his Town career last season, was soon into the thick of the action and added Town's fifth and sixth goals of the afternoon.

Three wins out of three to start the new season is an excellent start. But lets keep our feet firmly on the ground - this is a marathon after all and not a sprint.
