Match Report

Ipswich Town 4 Charlton Athletic 2

IPSWICH recovered from Saturday's 4-1 setback against QPR with a barnstorming victory over the Division One leaders.

Ipswich's response to that belly-up was to call Tony Mowbray, their first-team coach, out of semi-retirement. Mowbray, 35, had stated it would need an emergency for him to play again - and Charlton soon exposed the full extent of Ipswich's defensive malady.

James Scowcroft's deflected drive fired Ipswich ahead but Charlton hit back to lead with only 11 minutes played. Andy Hunt rose unhindered to head the equaliser when Eddie Youds returned a left-wing corner, and Hunt then hit the second through Richard Wright's legs.

But fears that Ipswich were to endure another 90 minutes of torment proved unfounded. They raised their game to square things up before the break, Mark Venus on hand to convert from close range.

David Johnson, closely shackled throughout, stooped to head Ipswich in front midway through the second half and a rousing recovery was complete when Mick Stockwell hammered a fourth past Dean Kiely from Scowcroft's assist.
