Town again victorious at Maine Road
A splendid winning goal from Mark Venus in extra time and the Blues are just two games away from a visit to the Millennium Stadium.
The opening few minutes of the game were quite scrappy, with Fabian Wilnis upending Haarland, but it was City that began to dominate and they created the first scoring opportunity of the game in the 5th minute when Goater headed just over from a Wanchope cross.
Shortly after Hermann Hreidarsson pulled off an excellent challenge on Wanchope, but the City striker was off the mark on 10 minutes. A long upfield ball beat both Hreidarsson and Goater and fell to Tiatto. Tiatto played the ball back into Goater's path on the edge of the penalty area and his low shot cannoned into the net off Richard Wright's left hand post.
Ipswich were struggling to get into the Manchester City half and on the quarter hour mark could have been two down but this time Goater's shot struck the post and rebounded out to safety.
Town's first scoring opportunity came after 20 minutes but Fabian Wilnis's shot was high and minutes later City's Weaver saved James Scowcroft's header at the second attempt.
Wiekens then shot just wide at the other end before the main talking point of the first half. The home side had penalty appeals turned down after a strong challenge by Hermann Hreidarsson left Horlock requiring attention for a nasty headwound.
Ipswich gained their first corner of the game just a minute before the break, but Jim Magilton's effort was easily cleared. Fabian Wilnis was then tripped by Haarland, but the resulting free-kick from Mark Venus was miss hit and again easily cleared by the City defence.
Jermaine Wright was introduced after the break, in place of Hreidarsson, and what a change that made. Within minutes of the restart he shot just wide of the goal with Weaver flat-footed.
Ipswich were now taking control of the game and their due reward came on 60 minutes. David Johnson's header was fumbled and dropped by Weaver and Matt Holland snuck in to score from 2 yards.
City however were still creating chances. Goater should have done better from a Wright-Phillips cross, but he scuffed his shot, and Horlock's free-kick was just over the bar from 30-yards out.
With 10 minutes left of normal time, Matt Holland latched onto David Johnson's through ball but fired just wide.
So, extra time ....
Weaver was called into action just a minute into the first extra time period and saved well with his feet from Fabian Wilnis's shot.
Wanchope then struck the foot of a post and Goater was just wide with his effort after rounding Mark Venus.
The team's switched ends and within minutes Weaver was in action again to tip away Jim Magilton's free-kick.
Then on 109 minutes came the winner. Mark Venus played the ball to James Scowcroft, and as the home defence stood static Venus picked up the return ball, strode into the City penalty area and shot past Weaver.
With just seconds to play Titus Bramble cleared the ball off the line from Wanchope's header.
Does'nt quite make up for our '81 FA Cup Semi-Final defeat but were getting there !
