Match Report

Ipswich 1-0 Barnsley

Give Daryl Murphy Roy Keane’s wrath every time.

Murphy made it six goals for Ipswich in just 11 games of his loan spell after four minutes.

And the Sunderland striker puts his great goal flourish down to the rantings of Tractor Boys boss Keane.

“If you’re not doing right, then there’s no better manager to tell it straight and sort you out than Roy Keane,” said the Ireland ace.

Murphy’s heroic goal exploits for Ipswich have come after a year at the Stadium of Light when he failed to hit the back of the net at all.

So no wonder the attacker, signed by Keane four years ago at Sunderland for £100,000, wants to remain at Portman Road when his loan ends in late May.

Murphy said: “I want to stay here. Hopefully Ipswich will want me and a fee can be agreed. I want to play regular first team football and I want to play for Roy Keane.”

Keane said: “It wasn’t pretty, but I’ll take that any day. Beggars can’t be choosers.

“Everybody gave 100 per cent and I’m contented with the players.”

The difference between the teams was Murphy’s close-range effort which resulted from a terrible blunder by Barnsley keeper Luke Steele.

Barnsley manager Mark Robins described his keeper as a “hothead” after he raced from goal towards the touchline to try and see the ball out for a throw-in.

But Spanish striker Pablo Counago was lurking on the blind side and nicked the ball off Steele before sending a long-distance effort against the foot of the post.

Poacher Murphy was on hand to slam the rebound into the unguarded net.

And Robins groaned: “It was an embarrassing goal. You wouldn’t see that on a park.”
