Peterborough 7 Ipswich 1: Ferguson in seventh heaven at Posh rout

Darren Ferguson heaped praise on his Peterborough charges in the wake of their biggest-ever Championship triumph.

Newly promoted Posh continued a promising start to their fourth season at this level by pulverising sorry Ipswich with a stunning scoring spree.

Frontman Lee Tomlin led the onslaught with a hat-trick while rookie strike-partner Paul Taylor marked his first starting appearance with two goals.

Skipper Grant McCann also added a brace as Posh condemned their nine-man visitors to a fourth straight defeat.

Manager Ferguson said: 'To win 7-1 at any level is terrific. To do it in the Championship against a team of Ipswich's standing is nothing short of magnificent.

'I couldn't be more delighted with my players, the scoreline and also with the way we carved Ipswich open to go 4-1 up when it was still 11 versus 11.

'Hopefully this will be a day that everyone will remember for a long time but we won't get carried away.

'We knew we needed a good start to the season and we've managed that.'

Ipswich incredibly held the lead for a brief first-half spell after Keith Andrews struck in the 23rd minute with a 30-yard blockbuster – his second goal in as many games after arriving on loan from Blackburn.

But Posh quickly set about launching an astonishing attacking performance.

Taylor levelled on the half-hour when rifling in from 15 yards after a Mark Little cross had been laid into his path by George Boyd.

Tomlin added a second when curling Posh into a 38th-minute lead before Taylor helped himself to his second when keeping his composure in a one-on-one situation in the 40th minute.

Tomlin followed his sidekick's lead by latching on to a McCann pass to fire number four two minutes later before things went even more pearshaped for struggling Town.

They had wideman Lee Martin harshly dismissed for a challenge on Little even though he appeared to take a piece of the ball and another sending-off soon followed.

Half-time substitute Tommy Smith also received his marching orders after tangling with Tomlin just 71 seconds after his introduction.

That offence appeared to take place just outside the box but referee Graham Scott pointed to the penalty spot and McCann duly obliged.

McCann then swept in a deflected sixth goal after being picked out by a Lee Frecklington pass before Tomlin added the final gloss in stoppage time by completing his treble.

Quite a performance. Ipswich have now conceded a staggering 12 goals in their last two games to leave manager Paul Jewell fuming.

He admitted: 'I was ashamed by that display. Our defending was shambolic but, as manager, I have to take responsibility for our results.

'I couldn't believe what I was seeing especially in the 12 minutes when Peterborough scored four times. I'm certainly not going to hide behind certain refereeing decisions after a defeat like this.

'Ultimately, everything comes back to me and I have to make sure I get the right people in to take this club forward.

'We've got some weak characters. We need to get some strong characters as there's a lot of work ahead.'
