Match Report

Ipswich Town 0 Bolton Wanderers 1

BOLTON stole maximum points with a last-gasp goal from Bob Taylor, ironically after Ipswich had dominated the proceedings.

Promotion hopefuls Ipswich, who began the day in second place, were undone in stoppage time. Substitute Arnar Gunnlaugsson was allowed to run 50 yards before slipping the ball into Taylor's path and he fired in a shot which went in off a post.

Ipswich had been the first to threaten when Bolton's defence allowed David Johnson's long throw to bounce in the box and Tony Mowbray almost nipped in.

Bolton hit back after that and Dean Holdsworth looked set to fire them into the lead until his shot was blocked.

Holdsworth was then put in by Scott Sellars but Richard Wright was out quickly to dispossess the striker and show why he earned a call-up to the England squad for last week's friendly with the Czech Republic.

Ipswich almost went ahead on the half-hour when Bobby Petta's cross was headed out by Jon Newsome only to deflect off Matt Holland's back and against the outside of a post.

Bolton felt they should have had a penalty in first half stoppage time when Michael Johansen's shot was charged down by Mowbray.

Ipswich made a bright start to the second half and after 50 minutes Johnson raced onto a Jamie Clapham through-ball to fire in a shot which Jussi Jaaskelainen saved well. Johnson forced the save of the game four minutes later - racing onto a James Scowcroft pass and sending in a drive which Jaaskelainen tipped over.

A Clapham free-kick was almost touched home by Scowcroft with to minutes to go but, just as the game appeared set to end goalless, Bolton delivered their knock-out blow and inflicted Ipswich's third home defeat of the season.
