Match Report

Torquay United 0 Ipswich Town 3

Torquay's hopes of a Coca-Cola Cup upset were snuffed out by Ipswich midfielder Matt Holland, who hit two goals.

Pushed forward from his usual role of sweeper by manager George Burley, Holland struck in the 22nd and 61st minutes.

Ipswich, dominating every facet of play, should have been well in front before Holland fired in a right-foot volley from 22 yards after a chested-down pass from Mark Stein.

Torquay, badly outgunned in the first half, briefly threatened a revival early in the second half, with striker Andy McFarlane and Kevin Hill both missing clear chances.

But just when it looked as if the Devon side might rally, Holland killed them off with a diving header in the 61st minute from a right wing cross by Bobby Petta.

Ipswich skipper Geraint Williams, whose passing had sustained Ipswich throughout, was denied by the legs of Torquay keeper Matthew Gregg in the 89th minute.

But seconds later Kieron Dyer punished some desperate Torquay defending with a left-foot shot for goal number three.
