Ipswich, after five successive league defeats, earned a worthy goalless draw against Grasshoppers Zurich in their U.E.F.A Cup second-round frist-leg tie.
There was no score at half time and the talented Swiss side containing seven current internationals, had been made to play hard.
In fact, Ipswich, for whom Gates was in impressive form, almost took the lead in the fifteenth minute when Brazil was put clear by Burley. But his shot from fifteen yards was blocked by the goalkeeper. Cooper then made two fine saves in quick succession from Ponte and Egli
Ipswich enjoyed equal possession and Burley went close with a twenty-yard drive. Wark and Mariner got shots on target but they did not trouble Berbig.
Wark was booked in the 36th minute for bringing down Wehrili. From the free kick by Ponte Cooper made a magnificent save from Hermanns header.
Ipswich had another scare before the interval when Ponte burst forward, shrugging of a challenge from Beattie. But his shot was diverted off Mills for a corner.
Beattie raised Ipswich's hopes with a tremendous 20-yard drive in the 55th minute, which Berbig saved well.
Ipswich began to make more impact and in the 64th minute Brazil just failed to connect after Butcher headed down Mills corner from the left.
Two minutes later Gates saw his deflected shot turned round the post by the Swiss keeper. Ipswich continually frustrated Grasshoppers' attacking efforts, with Beattie and Osman outstanding at the back
