Town cling on
Ipswich Town's hopes of staying in the Premiership were given a huge boost after a vital 1-0 win over Middlesbrough. That result leaves us just 2 points behind Sunderland with two games to play. Thing's are now getting interestingÂ…
Darren Bent scored the goal after 58 minutes just 20 seconds after coming on as a substitute. But Town created many opportunities before that in what was a well deserved victory.
After just 2 minutes Marcus Bent blazed over from inside the box after Marcus Stewart's ball was deflected into his path.
Martijn Reuser then went close from a free kick just outside the box but he failed to get the ball up and down in time to dip under the bar.
Ipswich continued to push on but were met by a Boro side who have been strong in the defensive department all season, even if they failed to create any notable opportunities in the opening half.
Town's strikers again linked up well with the half coming to a close when Bent put Marcus Stewart through on goal. Stewart looked composed but his effort went agonisingly wide.
The second half started much the way that the first did with Town looking the more dangerous of the sides. Marcus Stewart had another great chance to give us the lead when Mark Schwarzer dropped Reuser's free-kick only for Stewart to put his effort wide of the post.
Stewart and Bent then made way for Alun Armstrong and Darren Bent in what you could call an inspired substitution by George Burley.
Within 20 seconds of the substitution, Hermann Hreidarsson flicked on Jamie Clapham's corner and Darren Bent knocked the ball in with his knee.
As the half went on we grew in confidence and should have had the points wrapped up after 70 minutes only for Armstrong to head against the post.
Boro would stage a late fight back after that and Andy Marshall had to be at his best to tip over a header from Gareth Southgate. But that was the best that Boro could come up with and it could have been 2-0 in the dying minutes but Schwarzer knocked Clapham's rasping drive behind for a corner.
So it's all to play for in these last two games - fingers crossed that Sunderland don't get any more points!
