Match Report

Bury 0 Ipswich Town 1

Ipswich Town finally confirmed their place in the Division One play-offs to the delight of their 2,000 travelling away fans.

This was a tense match on an awful pitch which was devoid of grass and full of holes.

Consequently ball control was difficult as every pass seemed to bobble, and Bury's direct style of play was better suited to it than Town's passing game.

Ipswich may consider themselves a little fortunate to have gone into half-time all square as the home side seemed to have almost all the play.

Richard Wright made a series of fine saves, the best of them a brilliant reflex stop to keep out a close-range header by Ellis.

Town were limited to breakaways and had only one meaningful attempt in the first 45 minutes when Alex Mathie saw his shot on the turn saved.

Manager George Burley made the bold move of introducing James Scowcroft for Bobby Petta at the interval to play three up front and immediately they were able to get the ball in the Bury half and keep it there.

Matt Holland was twice unlucky with a shot just over the bar and a header blocked on the line, while Scowcroft also saw one kicked off the goal-line.

The decisive moment came in the 74th minute when Mick Stockwell received the ball on the right-hand touchline and burst past two defenders before unleashing an angled drive with the outside of his right foot into the far corner for a wonderful solo goal.

Bury tried to hit back. Stockwell cleared a header off the line and Jemson headed wide from inside the six-yard box, but Town held on.

George Burley was delighted that his team have extended their season for the second year running, and now has to wait to see which of Sunderland, Charlton or Middlesbrough will provide the opposition in the semi-finals.

TEAM THAT PLAYED BURY: Wright, Stockwell, Taricco, Dyer, Venus, Cundy, Clapham, Holland, Johnson, Mathie, Petta. Subs: Scowcroft (for Petta, 46 mins), Sonner (for Mathie, 80). Not used: Uhlenbeek.
