Match Report

Lisbie late strike claims points

Charlton snatched their first win of the season as a goalless draw looked likely at Portman Road against the in-form Ipswich Town.

Addicks substitute Kevin Lisbie shocked the home crowd with a bolt from the blue to send the visitors back to London with a dramatic smash-and-grab victory.

The Tractor Boys had dominated for long spells of the game after Charlton has started the better of the two sides. John Salako was played through by Graham Stuart's accurate through-ball in the opening exchanges, only for the Addicks' winger to be denied by a fine full-stretch Matteo Sereni save.

The let-off sparked the home side into life and midweek goalscoring hero Finidi George spurned a gilt-edged chance, heading from close-range into the grateful arms of Addicks' keeper Dean Kiely.

The livewire Nigerian international was in the thick of the action soon after prompting another save out of Kiely with a glancing header Town had the bit between their teeth now and Martijn Reuser went close with a rising free-kick before Kiely palmed away a point-blank Titus Bramble header with a fantastic reflex save.

Half-time came too early for George Burley's side who were thrown out of their rhythm by the interval.

Hot-shot Marcus Stewart had a rare off-day and was replaced by Jim Magilton early in the second half, while Charlton boss Alan Curbishley sent on eventual matchwinner Lisbie at the expense of Salako.

Magilton almost made an immediate impact by orchestrating a fine one-two with fellow substitute Pablo Counago, only for the Spaniard to be denied a clear sight of goal after a well-timed Luke Young last-gasp tackle.

But against the run of play with five minutes remaining Lisbie stepped up to fire home the only goal of the game.

Lisbie gave Town the Blues with an unstoppable 25-yard angled volley over the head of Sereni and into the back of the home net to the delight of the travelling support.
