Match Report

West Ham United 0 Ipswich Town 1

The Ipswich manager, Paul Jewell, will be able to look back on a victory when he celebrates his 47th birthday today after his side outgunned promotion favourites West Ham.

Midfielder Lee Bowyer, who spent an unhappy season with the home team nine years ago, left his manager’s present late, scoring following a corner with a minute to go.

Jewell fielded an unchanged side for the third game in nine days and said: “A month ago we looked bereft of ideas, we looked as if we couldn’t pick our feet up. We’ve had a little change of fortune, we’ve got good players and at the moment we’re playing with confidence.”

Sam Allardyce chastised West Ham for another poor home display, saying they showed “a lack of understanding and lack of determination in the last minute of a game of football”.

Ipswich arrived in East London to settle scores. The two sides last met in 2005, when West Ham beat Ipswich in the Championship play-off semi-finals for a second consecutive year.

The visitors looked by far the more threatening with Bowyer harrying throughout. Early on his chip over Robert Green hit a post but the goalkeeper had no such luck in the dying moments as the ball bounced off the post and then a defender before Bowyer slammed it home.
