PAUL JEWELL BEEF AT SLOPPY DISPLAY

RYAN STEVENSON’S rocket helped ensure Ipswich ended the season with victory – but boss Paul Jewell blew a gasket.

Scottish midfielder Stevenson rifled in his first goal for Town as they heaped more woe on Doncaster’s miserable campaign.

The win should have been more comfortable and Jewell was not happy.

He said: “It was nice to finish with a win but I wouldn’t say we finished on a high.

“We were 2-0 up and cruising but let them back into it.

“We were distinctly average in that second half and that has helped make my mind up that we need to improve the squad.

“My standards are higher than that.”

Tommy Smith headed the visitors in front in the 11th minute from Lee Martin’s corner.

Town forced seven corners in 20 minutes and Daryl Murphy crashed a header against the bar.

It was 2-0 in the 29th minute when Stevenson rattled his stunning drive in off the underside of the bar.

Donny looked like being steamrollered until a tidy finish from Fabien Robert from Simon Gillett’s cross in the 34th minute gave them hope.

But Jason Scotland made it 3-1 from the penalty spot in the 78th minute after being chopped down by Habib Beye.

The defender went some way to making up when he netted a consolation in stoppage time.

He latched on to a free-kick from Martin Woods and tucked the ball through Arran Lee-Barrett’s legs for 3-2.

Doncaster manager Dean Saunders said: “We got bullied. Most of their players were 6ft and we didn’t stand up to them.

“James Husband made a tackle 10 minutes before half-time and got a standing ovation.

“That tells you everything you need to know.”
