A ninth minute penalty by Marcus Bent was enough to earn the Town a 1-0 win in Yugoslavia and a place in the second round of the UEFA Cup.
A much improved performance over recent league outings earned a 2-1 aggregate win, and but for a number of squandered chances in the second 45 minutes the margin of victory could have been much greater.
Town however could have been a goal down after just four minutes when Vaskovic struck an upright.
But the all important breakthrough came five minutes later when Finidi George sent in long cross from the right wing and Kizic was adjudged to have pushed Marcus Bent in the back in the penalty area.
The Hammersmith man stepped up to take the spot kick himself and calmly slotted the ball past Zilic in the Sartid goal.
On 16 minutes Bent could have made it two but was unfortunate to see his overhead kick come back off an upright.
The home side came close to an equaliser after 30 minutes when Jamie Clapham cleared Savic's goal bound header off the line and onto the bar.
It was an assured performance by the Town midfield and defence in the second half that saw Sartid limited to a minimum of goal attempts and indeed it was the Sartid goal that looked most under threat as Ipswich counter-attacked.
Jim Magilton with just the 'keeper to beat struck his shot straight at the advancing Zilic and George was slow to react to another good chance when the ball ran free on the edge of the six-yard box.
Tommy Miller, who replaced George after 65 minutes saw his powerful shot saved well by Zilic, and his right-wing cross into the Sartid area a few minutes later needed just a tap in from Bent but the Town striker steered the ball wide from six yards out.
