JAMES Scowcroft's eighth goal of the season set Ipswich Town up to move into second place in Division One with their sixth win in seven games as Wolves' mediocre run continued.

Mick Stockwell's injury-time header, from Richard Naylor's right-wing centre, was merely a postscript as the teams' recent sequences were maintained.

In the early stages, Ipswich may have been surprised to find Wolves, suffering from a poor run of results, threading together the better passes. But it was the East Anglians who soon led in the more important count of goals scored.

Michael Gilkes, probing well when going forward for the visitors, centred astutely after 14 minutes for Guy Whittingham, in his latest Wolves debut, to glance on a header just wide of a post.

Ipswich tested Wolves' weak spot intelligently at the other end, Scowcroft pulling wide on to the shortest defender, Gilkes. This tactic gave the England Under-21 striker the edge for George Burley's team in the 17th minute.

Matt Holland, wide on the left, crossed deep and Scowcroft, judging that Gilkes' leap was too low, chested the ball down and drove home through Mike Stowell's legs.

Wolves' best moment of the first half had arrived when their former defender, Mark Venus, sliced an intended clearance back towards his own goal. David Connolly was teed up by Whittingham but slashed his shot high.
