Match Report

Euell brace inspires vital victory

Jason Euell ended his 11-month goal drought, scoring twice to give Southampton a third successive win in their struggle for survival.

Teenage substitute Matthew Paterson was also on target with his first-ever goal, just seconds after coming on as Saints achieved their biggest win of the season.

Saints coach Mark Wotte said: 'We are very happy tonight but we are still in trouble.

'My players have been physically and mentally strong. I thought they were fantastic tonight but we will have to win four or five of our last 11 games to stay in this league.'

Ipswich, who have managed just one win from their last seven home games, were booed off at the end and manager Jim Magilton admitted: 'That was the worst performance since I took charge. I've no idea what happened. We were second best.'

Euell scored on the halfhour with a clever backheader from Andrew Surman's free-kick.

He netted again in the 85th minute, rolling home the rebound after Ipswich goalkeeper Richard Wright blocked his first shot.

Three minutes later, Paterson sent a scorching low drive past the keeper.
