Match Report

The Late Late Show by ChevBlue

Town substitute Darren Ambrose hit the ball home from 8-yards out in the first minute of injury time to settle a lively encounter at Selhurst Park in a game very similar to that at FC Sartid last Thursday.

Solid in defence, with Wayne Brown and Chris Makin both putting in excellent performances, a committed midfield and a forward line that created many chances but managed to spurn the best of them.

In the first half Pablo Counago found himself in an excellent position on the left had side of the area but his attempt to curl the ball around 'keeper Davis was weekly hit, Marcus Bent had two excellent chances saved before the miss of the match just before the break.

Finidi George put in a low cross from the right-wing which found Bent at the far post but, but with just a simple tap-in required, the Town forward contrived to hit the ball back across the face of goal and out for a goal kick.

In the second half Finidi George, Jermaine Wright and Marcus Bent all came close for the Blue's but the best chance fell to Counago, who from an oblique angle managed to hit his shot against the base of the post from just two yards out.

Referee Fletcher also turned down penalty appeals by Town's players after Ambrose appeared to be felled by Hawkins inside the Don's area.

Town limited Wimbledon to just a handful of chances the closest of which was a 20-yard drive from McAnuff in the second half that went just wide of Andy Marshall's left-hand post.

Justice was done however with Ambrose's late winner and the team were applauded off the field by a large contigent of Town fans witnessing the Blue's first league win for seven weeks.

Footnote: The crowd of 3,238 was the lowest attendance at a league fixture featuring the Town since March 1953 when 3,116 were on hand for the home game with Leyton Orient.
