Match Report

Crystal Palace 2 Ipswich Town 2

A BIZARRE 20-yard own goal from stalwart Tony Mowbray capped Crystal Palace's spirited comeback and prevented Ipswich from claiming the fourth successive victory that would have pushed them right up on the shoulders of the First Division leaders.

Palace had kept clear of the relegation zone on the strength of three successive home wins and Leon McKenzie, on returning from a hamstring injury, used his pace to get to the byline, from where he crossed well to the back post for Matt Svensson to barge his way in and head the fifth-minute opener. It was the Swede's fifth goal in six games.

Ipswich are on a roll, however, and equalised six minutes later. Gary Croft's pass sent David Johnson down the right wing and his expertly delivered centre invited captain Matt Holland, Ipswich's match-winner at Nottingham Forest two days earlier, to run in late and head in.

It was Johnson, nipping on to Fan Zhiyi's ill-judged backpass 11 minutes before the interval, who gave the visitors the lead. The in-form striker unleashed a spectacular left-footed drive high into the net.

Richard Wright, in the Ipswich goal, denied Svensson with a superb save just after the restart, but he was out of luck in the 62nd minute. As he started to rush from his goal to intercept Svensson's flick-on, Tony Mowbray was also endeavouring to cut out the danger and, from outside the penalty area, the veteran defender saw his intended clearance slice over his own keeper's head and into the empty net.
