Palace's industry was largely misplaced against Ipswich's well-oiled defence, but they rocked the visitors with a classic one-two either side of half-time.
First Hayden Mullins rose to direct in Jamie Smith's cross as the interval loomed. Then, within 40 seconds of the restart, Clinton Morrison headed a second after Richard Wright had saved at close range from Fan Zhiyi.
Ipswich levelled on 64 minutes when Johnson's cross picked out Jamie Clapham to score with a flying header, but Palace were finding the gaps and Morrison squeezed home the winner in the 72nd minute.
