Match Report

Ipswich Town 1 Derby County 0

DERBY, seven points clear of the First Division less than a month ago, stumbled to their third defeat in five games as Ipswich moved a step closer to confirming a place in the play-offs with an early goal from Tony Vaughan.

With these teams boasting the best goal-scoring records in the division, it was of little surprise the game featured a healthy number of early opportunities.

Ipswich, who bragged the best record with 68 League goals, should have scored in the 12th minute when they won a penalty.

With Ian Marshall absent from Ipswich's attack through illness, James Scowcroft was brought in to partner Alex Mathie and the 20-year-old soon forced a fine save from Russell Hoult.

Soon afterwards, Darren Wassall wrestled Mathie to the ground, but Steve Sedgley's kick was high and wide and Derby survived. The pressure, though, was unrelenting and when Paul Mason's shot was blocked, Gus Uhlenbeek should have scored.

Derby responded briefly when Ashley Ward headed wide but still Ipswich pushed forward and, when Mathie chased a loose ball, Hoult committed himself. Mathie shot off target.

However, Ipswich managed the goal their possession deserved when, in the 34th minute, a corner on the right from Sedgley found the head of Vaughan and the defender collected his first goal for Ipswich with some force.

Ipswich, though, can leak goals as easily as they score and were fortunate to survive four minutes from the interval when Robbie van der Laan's header hit the underside of the bar.

Derby made an alteration at halftime with Ward, who had been suffering from a heavy cold, being replaced by Ron Willems. The change, though, did Derby few favours, the pattern of the game similar to the first half.

Scowcroft continued to cause problems and soon after the restart he beat Dean Yates to another dangerous cross from Uhlenbeek. Hoult, though, was able to gather.

Mason, Vaughan and Willems all came close to extending Ipswich's lead, while Derby's hopes of stealing an equaliser were dented when a curling corner from Lee Carsley was well saved by Wright on his line.
