Match Report

Ipswich Town 2 Portsmouth 0

Ipswich scored a far more comprehensive victory over Portsmouth than the scoreline suggests.

A 30th minute header from central defender Jason Cundy gave Ipswich a well-deserved lead.

It was not until the 68th minute that David Johnson added a second to make sure of three points.

It was a day of mixed fortunes for Cundy. He headed his first goal of the season from wide of the far post from Bobby Petta's free kick.

The ball flew across the face of Alan Knight's goal and just inside the far post. Just before the interval, Cundy was booked for a late challenge on Mathias Svensson.

It was his eighth booking of the season and although two have been in the Coca-Cola Cup, he now faces a suspension.

Johnson's goal was his fifth in six games for the club since being signed from Bury in a £1.1million deal.

He sent a left-foot shot into the roof of the net from a cross by Matt Holland who had been sent clear down the right by Geraint Williams.

There was a catalogue of Ipswich missed chances and good saves from the veteran Knight.

After nine minutes Johnson picked up a faulty back header from Robbie Pethick but screwed his shot wide with only the keeper to beat.

In the 68th minute Mick Stockwell cut in from the right for Ipswich and fired against the far post and three minutes later James Scowcroft also hit the woodwork after beating Andy Thomson.

Portsmouth were also lucky when Knight saved at close range from Scowcroft, the ball bounced up for Johnson to put in a header towards goal but substitute Andy Turner made a spectacular goal-line clearance.

Little was seen of Portsmouth as an attacking force until the closing stages. They were already beaten by the time that Turner was denied by the woodwork in the 81st minute.

In the final stages England Under-21 international Richard Wright brought off three notable saves from Sam Igoe, John Durnin and Svensson.

In the last minute Portsmouth might have grabbed a consolation but Turner slid his shot wide of an open goal.
