Match Report

Tranmere Rovers 0 Ipswich Town 2

IPSWICH moved imperiously into second place in the table with a flowing performance which made a mockery of their recent run of disappointing results.

Chris Holland really should have opened the scoring in the 17th minute, but miscued an excellent chance following a good cross from Gary Croft. Within a minute, however, Holland made amends, thrashing a loose ball home after Joe Murphy had only been able to parry a close-range effort by David Johnson.

Murphy made an excellent save with his feet to prevent Jamie Clapham increasing the lead, as Ipswich continued to pile on the pressure.

Tranmere came close to equalising moments before half-time when Gary Jones took advantage of ponderous defending to lash the ball narrowly over the bar following a neat build-up involving Gareth Roberts and Wayne Allison.

Within minutes of the restart, however, Johnson blasted an excellent chance over the bar and Jamie Scowcroft rattled the foot of the post with a diving header. The second goal duly arrived when Johnson scored with an overhead volley after Murphy had flapped the ball off Holland's head, following a flowing movement orchestrated by Jim Magilton.

Still Ipswich pressed, with Scowcroft heading against the post for a second time and Murphy making a splendid save to keep out Clapham's follow up. In a rare Tranmere attack Mick Stockwell headed off the line to keep out Allison's header.
