ROYLE PRAISES TEAM SPIRIT

Ipswich boss Joe Royle praised the team spirit of his injury-hit side after the 1-0 win over Luton at Portman Road.

The hosts were thankful for the cool finish of substitute Ian Westlake in the 69th minute against the stubborn Hatters.

Westlake chested down a 60-yard pass from Darren Currie, evaded a defender before running down the left and firing a low right-footed shot inside Marlon Beresford's near post.

Royle said: "It was a fantastic win and no-one can question the spirit in the team. Jason De Vos played the second half with a dead leg and we were thinking of taking him off at the interval.

"We have picked up more injuries. Dean Bowditch took a knock on his hip, Castro Sito has an ankle injury and Danny Haynes took a knock on his knee. De Vos, Bowditch and Sito all look like missing Monday's visit to Stoke.

"Our crowd was quiet at times but there was no carping at the players. We need the crowd behind us because there will be better times to come.

"It's not hard to see why Luton have done so well. They are full of confidence and remind me of my Oldham team. They are a team in every sense of the word."

Luton had plenty of chances but were often denied by 18-year-old goalkeeper Shane Supple, who was the star of the Ipswich's youth team triumph last season.

The Hatters came close to equalising in the 76th minute when substitute Steve Howard had the ball in the net with a diving header but Steve Robinson was penalised for a push on Supple.

"In Supple and Lewis Price, we have two of the best young goalkeepers in the league," Royle added. "These lads have exceptional talent and Shane is great at crosses and has terrific quick feet."

Westlake was left out of the starting line-up following the midweek defeat at Hull, and Royle was delighted with the player's response when he was brought off the bench.

"He came back and proved a point," Royle added. "When he plays like he did today, with all his running, he is a great asset to us."
