UNLIKELY SITE FOR BUILD UP

Ipswich Town continued their pre-season build-up at the unlikely venue of a small club on the outskirts of Chelmsford.

Springfield of the Essex Intermediate League are celebrating their Golden Jubilee this year and to mark the occasion Town manager Bobby Ferguson generously agreed to send a team to play their local club.

Although in the end they should have had more goals their victory was quite decisive.

The Town defence was rarely under pressure and Jon Hallworth in goal was virtually a spectator for the whole 90 minutes. After several early chance the first goal came mid-way through the first half when Clampett in the Springfield goal could only parry a fierce shot from Neil Rimmer and Lee Howey was on hand to slot the ball home.

Just on half time Dalien Atkinson, whose pace always worried the home defence, slammed a shot against the upright and Keith Gorman was on hand to score from the rebound.

The second half followed a similar pattern with Mick Stockwell playing well against his elder brother Barry and frequently looking dangerous.

The only goal of the second half came after an hour's play when Howey was brought down in the area and Andy Crane hammered the spot kick into the roof of the net.

Town team: Hallworth, Emmerson, O'Donnell, Crane, Stockwell, Rimmer, McGavin, Atkinson, Gorman, Howey and Parkin, Subs (not used): Cape, Mayhew, Kiwomya.
