  Portman Portfolio: Lee Norfolk (from the Match Day programme v Derby County 2.4.1996) Last season [1994-95], young professional Lee Norfolk turned down the opportunity of World Cup glory to fight for his future here at Portman Road. The 20-year-old midfielder was wanted by the Under-19 squad in his native New Zealand for some important Youth World Cup Qualifying games in Fiji – but he decided to remain in Ipswich instead, in a bid to tie down a regular first-team spot. And, after George Burley arrived at the club at the end of 1994, and a new era was ushered in at Portman Road, Lee’s decision was vindicated as he broke into the senior set-up for the first time. His first appearance in front of Town fans came as a second-half substitute at home to Southampton at the end of February last year and the youngster played his part as Town recovered from a goal down to win 2-1. “I was pushed on at half-time as the manager wanted things switched around a bit,” recalls Lee. “When you come on as a sub you are expected to do something to affect the game and really I was there just to up the tempo a bit and make a nuisance of myself. “We ended up coming back to win the game, and I supplied the pass that allowed Lee Chapman to score one of our goals, so I was pretty pleased with my contribution.” George Burley was also pleased with Lee’s progress, and handed the youngster his full debut the following Tuesday evening, at home to mighty Newcastle. “All I can really remember from that match is chasing shadows,” laughs Lee, who has recently recovered from a bout of tonsillitis which has kept him sidelined. “Up until half-time I felt we were in with a chance, but after the break they really showed their class and it was very, very hard work. “But that match was my first full game and it is a day that I will never forget. I was up against the England midfield paring of the time in Robert Lee and Barry Venison and that was certainly a learning experience for me.” Another substitute appearance came against Coventry in May, but since then Lee has struggled to recapture the form that won him recognition. “To be honest I can’t blame anyone but myself,” admits the player. “I haven’t been playing consistently enough to get my chance this season, and that has been very frustrating. “The main thing as a young player is to know that you are progressing and the culmination of that progression is to be in the first-team – I’ve had one Anglo-Italian Cup game and a couple on the bench so far and I am not satisfied with myself. “I went through a difficult patch earlier in the season where I lost my form and my confidence, but that is back now and I have re-discovered the hunger to succeed. “The manager has his set squad now, and it is up to anyone else to play consistently well in the Reserves and force themselves into his plans. “You can’t argue with it – we want promotion, and the side that is going out has generally been doing the business, so it’s unlikely that the line-ups will change that much. “It’s a matter of working hard and staying patient. I’ve had the carrot of a couple of first-team games. Now I want another chance and I’m going to do all I can to get one.”
