Ian Redford was a giant of a man , a classy wonderfully intelligent footballer who was revered and respected by everyone he ever played with or against . For Ipswich Town , he was someone we all looked up to , not just because of his pedigree and the huge success he enjoyed in Scotland with Rangers and Dundee United ,but because he was a kind caring man who always looked out for others and always enjoyed a laugh. It was our great privilege to have known him and played with him - I am so sad my dear friend is longer with us . Our thoughts and prayers are with Janine , Natalie and Ian junior and the wider Redford family.

  • RIP Ian who has sadly passed away aged just 53

Ian Redford joined Rangers from Dundee for £210,000 in 1980 from Dundee, i think the fee that the Gers paid for him was exaggerated and in his time at Ibrox, he was what I'd say to put it mildly a failure.

On his return to Tayside to play for Dundee United he seemed to play far better for them, then obviusly his transfer to Portman Road.

Remember seeing him appear as player manager for Brechin City at St.Mirren in 1992.

Bumped into him once in Dundee in April 1980, just after he signed for Rangers when I was on my way to Dundee FC'S Dens Park ground to watch a Junior Cup semi final between Lochee United and Benburb, where the attendance was bigger than the previous night's Premier League fixture between Dundee United and Celtic.

  • His first club was Errol Rovers, from there he went to Dundee before going to Rangers. After Ipswich he played for his hometown club, St Johnstone and then had a short spell as player manager at Brechin City before finishing at Raith. Spent some time as a football agent before starting his fishing buisness Errol Rovers Dundee 1976 -80, Rangers 80 - 85 Dundee Utd 85-88 Ipswich St Johnstone 91-93 Brechin City 93-94 Raith 94 -95

  • Runs a place in Scotland called Lower Newtyle, on the River Tay - offers fishing and golfing holidays! Ian plays Golf off a handicap of 2.

  • Represented Scotland at Youth and Under-21 levels.
